What's New in Perennials? These are not your grandmother's perennials, but these hot new varieties are sure to spice up your flower beds.

agapanthus Lily of the Nile

Agapanthus or Lily of the Nile 'Silver Moon'

This is a fantastic, long lasting, pale-blue flower that blooms for almost 60 days.  Makes a terrific cut flower. Agapanthus is border line hardy here but can easily be grown in pots and protected during the winter. 24 in tall and needs moist rich soil.

alstromeria peruvian Lily Alstromeria - or Peruvian Lily is another lovely, fragrant cut flower that has apricot- pink and creamy yellow blooms in mid-late summer. Sun and good drainage.
Columbine Winky Double Blue and White Columbine – ‘Winky Double Blue & White Mix’- Upward facing blue & white flowers on compact 12-18 in plant. Best in part shade with good drainage.
Gaillardia Arizona Apricot

Gaillardia 'Arizona Apricot'- Large 3 inch, apricot flowers with soft yellow tips, compact form and blooms all summer. 10-12 inches.

Gaillardia Mesa Bright Bicolor Gaillardia 'Mesa Bright Bicolor'- Bicolor flowers of bright red and yellow, heat and drought tolerant, blooms all summer. 16-18 inches
Gaillardia Moxie Gaillardia 'Moxie' - Fluted yellow petals with bright orange centers, blooms throughout our hot humid summers. 18- 24 inches
Heucherella Redstone Falls

Heucherella orFoamy Bells
‘Redstone Falls’ and ‘Yellowstone Falls’- The first ever trailing heucherella. Related to coral bells, these foamy bells thrive in our heat and humidity. Redstone has vibrant coppery colored leaves with one foot trailing stems. Yellowstone has bright chartreuse leaves with red centers and stems that trail as much as 3 feet! Fun in containers or even a hanging basket.

Coneflower Tomato Soup

Coneflower ‘Tomato Soup’ - Warm tomato red flowers as large as 6 inches on a 32 inch plant.

Echinacea Hot Papaya

Coneflower ‘Hot Papaya’ – Deep orange double flowers on a 32 inch plant.

Coneflower Marmalade

Coneflower ‘Marmalade’ – Tangerine-orange double flowers resemble large colorful pompoms. 26-30 inches tall.

Coneflower Green Jewel

Coneflower ‘ Green Jewel’ – Green petals surround a large green cone. Fragrant flowers on a compact, 20 inch plant.

 

Coreopsis Star Cluster

Coreopsis ‘Star Cluster’ – Creamy white flowers with gold centers. In the cooler weather of spring and fall, the flowers have a deep purple eye. 18- 24 inches.

Early Bird Cardinal

 

Daylily- ‘Early Bird Cardinal-I know most folks think “oh no not another so called fabulous new daylily”…But since lots of us are Cardinal Fans this new daylily sports loads of watermelon red flowers early in the season and can rebloom as many as 4 times . At only 21 in tall, it would be great even in a pot because the foliage is evergreen!

 

Baby Breath Festival Star

 

Gypsophilia or Baby’s Breath ‘Festival Star’- Improved vigor, compact and longer blooming than your grandmother’s baby’s breath. Dense sprays of fluffy white flowers on short stems over a long period of time.

Hibiscus Cranberry Crush

Hardy Hibiscus ‘Cranberry Crush’- Short compact 3-4 foot shrub with huge 7-8 inch scarlet red flowers and leathery, maple-leaf like leaves.

Hibiscus Summer Storm

Hibiscus ‘Summer Storm’- Deep wine purple foliage, huge 8-10 inch pink flowers on a compact 4-5 ft. plant. Blooms profusely for nearly 12 weeks, twice as long as most Hibiscus.

Helenium Tye Dye

 

Helenium ‘Tie Dye’- Tons of daisy type flowers late in the season when color is sparse. A native cultivar with fluted petals and two tone colors of yellow and purple/pink.

 

 

Heliopsis Tuscan Sun

 

Heliopsis ‘Tuscan Sun’ – Not so new but underused. This native cultivar boasts loads of golden yellow daisy flowers from mid through late summer. Compact habit and 2-3 ft. Great late color!

Heucherella Redstone Falls

 

Heucherella or Foamy Bells ‘Redstone Falls’ and ‘Yellowstone Falls’

Related to heuchera or coral bells, these are the first ever trailing heucherella. Foamy bells thrive in our heat and humidity. Hosta Empress Wu

Hosta ‘Empress Wu’- The largest known hosta to date at 4 ft. tall and wide. Huge, thick leaves make a massive upright clump. Pale violet flowers.

 Hosta Hudson Bay

Hosta ‘Hudson Bay’ – Bright blue-green leave margins with creamy white centers.  Leaves have heavy substance and white flowers. 2 ft
Hosta Orange Marmalade

Hosta ‘Orange Marmalade’ – Puckered leaves emerge yellow with blue-green margins. Centers lighten later in the season. Lavender flowers. Only 16 in tall.

Hosta Stained Glass

Hosta ‘Stained Glass’ – Huge 10 inch bright gold leaves with dark green margins. Fragrant pale lavender flowers. 15 inches.

Nepeta Little trudy

Nepeta ‘Little Trudy’- It’s true! I just had to have this catmint partly because of the name…But, I have been told by several good gardeners that they love this dwarf ,long blooming, silvery foliage plant with nonstop lavender blooms. Likes it hot and sunny.

Shasta Daisy ‘Daisy May’-Super compact, and loaded with pure white sturdy daisies. This shasta blooms all season long unless extremely hot. 20-24 inches tall.

Spiderwort Sunshine Charm

Tradescantia or Spiderwort ‘Sunshine Charm’- an improvement over ‘Sweet Kate’ – this glowing gold foliage holds up to our heat, has a more compact habit and plenty of bright purple flowers in early-mid summer.

Viola Rebecca

 Viola ‘Rebecca’- Vanilla scented white flowers with soft lemon yellow centers. When not in bloom, foliage is evergreen. A nice addition to the shade garden.
