Superbells ‘Cherry Star’ -or callibrachoa are a fantastic choice for window boxes and containers because they are compact trailers with loads of tiny, low maintenance, ever blooming flowers. They need good drainage, however, and for that reason may not be well suited to beds with irrigation. New this year is Superbells ‘Cherry Star’ with only 6-10 inches tall and hummers love it. Bright cherry red flower petals with bright golden spokes have a distinct star pattern.

Supertunia ‘White Russian’- Supertunias are improved petunias with increased vigor and drought tolerance. They are self-cleaning and need not be pruned. They are hungry though and need consistent feeding through the growing season. Supertunias are perfect in any garden setting. New this year is ‘White Russian’- creamy white with chocolate veins and 6-10 inches tall.

Supertunias- ‘Vista Bubblegum’ -The Vista supertunias are especially good for landscaping. They bloom earlier, grow taller and spread wide. Like all petunias, the ‘Vistas’ are heavy feeders. They grow 16-24 in tall but can trail as much as 60 inches. ‘Vista Bubblegum’ boasts large bright pink flowers that attract hummers and butters.

Sweet Potato Vines- ‘Illusion’ series- is a fantastic spiller or filler plants. Unlike traditional varieties the new ‘Illusion’ series is more controlled with a compact, 6-10 inch tall habit. It won’t bully all the other plants in the pot. ‘Illusion’ thrives in our heat and humidity. Sweet Caroline, Garnet Lace and Emerald lace are just a few available this year. Since they are foliage plants they combine nicely with flowering Snow Princess, Supertunias and Superbenas.

Superbenas are improved verbena varieties and make fantastic landscape plants. Superbenas are the big boys of the verbena family. They can tolerate dry soils and lower fertility than most annuals. They comes is a rainbow of colors. New for 2012 are the Superbena ‘Royale’ series with a compact, controlled growth habit and flowers that bloom earlier than most verbenas. The ‘Royale’ varieties are fit for containers or pots. New this year is Royale Peachy Keen with a more vivid peachy coral color and excellent mildew resistance.

Cyperus or papyrus ‘King Tut’- is one the most popular Proven Winner annuals and a no- brainier to grow. King Tut adds height, texture, and striking green upright interest to any garden. Easy to grow in full sun or light shade, King Tut is a water hog. You can submerge the entire plant in water or a container that holds water. If planted in a pot, just plug the drainage hole. King Tut can grow up to 6 ft. For a shorter version try ‘Baby Tut’ at only 2 ft.

‘Diamond Frost’ – Euphorbia ‘Diamond Frost’ is not new this year but is underused. Maybe because its wispy foliage appears delicate or wimpy, nothing like the tough, easy to grow buster that it really is. Diamond Frost adds texture, color and has airy white blooms that begin early and continue until frost. It is stunning planted in mass in garden beds or all alone in a pot. Deer resistant, heat, humidity and drought tolerant. Diamond Frost grows 12- 18 inches tall and is best in sun, but handles part shade just fine.

‘Snow Princess’- A must have for 2012, Snow Princess blooms profusely in both hot and cold weather. Snow Princess is vigorous like Supertunias and Superbenas; so it’s great planted in beds where it can spread. It should be planted solo in a pot or with other vigorous plants like sweet potato vine. Wonderfully fragrant, Snow Princess needs lots of water; in a hanging basket, probably twice a day during hot spells.

Senorita Rosalita- Oh la la! This thornless non-seeding cleome has it all going on! A 2-4 ft. shrub like plant with strong upright habit adds vertical interest to the garden. Rosalita loves the heat, tolerates drought, and sports hot pink flowers all season. It’s lavish dark green foliage likes lots of food, so feed regularly.
