Rick's Picks for Shade

Rick's Picks for shade include old fashion favorites like columbines and hostas as well as newer varieties of shade tolerant plants like certain coral bells which can handle our summer heat and humidity. Most shade loving plants can tolerate, and some even prefer, a few hours of morning sun.

AstilbeVisions

Astilbe 'Visions'

Astilbe is best grown in moist, rich organic soils in part or full shade. No heavy clay or standing water. Colorful raspberry flowers appear in early to mid summer atop feathery foliage. Plant reaches 15 inches tall with flowers. A summer mulch and regular waterings can keep the plant looking attractive all season.

Columbine 'Clementine'

Columbine 'Clementine'

Cloumbine can handle full sun to part shade, as long as the soil is rich, loose and well drained, no heavy clay. Nothing says spring like columbine- bright trumpet shaped flowers on mounding clumps of dainty looking, but tough, foliage. Double upward facing flowers bloom for 6 to 8 weeks and attract butterflies. Clementine has bluish green foliage and is 12-14 inches.

ColumbineOragamiMix

Columbine 'Oragami Mix'

Large 3 inch flowers in a range of cheerful colors. 'Origami Mix' might be the longest blooming columbine, lasting up to 3 months if the weather isn't too warm. 12-14 inch compact plants. Beuatiful in woodsy semi-shaded ares. Will spread and naturalize over time.

HeucheraGeorgiaPeach2

Coral Bells 'Georgia Peach'

Coral Bells are popular beacause of their attactive and colorful foliage that add interest to the shady garden. Recent introductions like 'Georgia Peach' include varieties that withstand our hot, humid summers. Large peach colored leaves with creamy white early-mid summer flowers really perk up a semi shaded garden. Flowers make great cut bouquets.

HeucheraCitronelle

Coral Bells 'Citronelle'

Another new fun foliage color, Citronelle, has bright lemon-yellow, wavy foliage that lightens up a shady spot. A compact mounding plant at only 12 in tall with creamy white early-mid summer flowers.

HeucherellaAlabama2

Foamy Bells 'Alabama Sunrise'

Similiar to coral bells but with a more vigorous growth habit. 'Alabama Sunrise' has toothed bright golden foliage with red veining. We've found the foamy bells to be a great addition to the shady garden, adding color and texture.

HostaJune

Hosta 'June'

Hostas are a mainstay of the shady garden. Newer varieties add color, texture and height to otherwise green gardens. 'June' has spear shaped blue-green margins with chartruese centers that turn gold during the summer. Good slug resistance. likes shade or some sun is ok. A smaller hosta at only 12-15 inches tall.

HostaPatriot

Hosta 'Patriot'

'Pariot' is our number one selling hosta  and for good reason. Dark green leaves with clean pure white variegation hold their color all season. Lavender flowers on a medium sized, 22 inch, plant. Can tolerate more sun than most hostas.

HostaSumSubstance

Hosta 'Sum and Substance'

When you need a big bold hosta, 'Sum and Substance' fits the bill. A 3 foot plant with 5 foot flower scapes relly makes a statement. Huge chartreuse rounded leaves, good slig resistance. Pretty lavender flowers mid summer. A bit of sun enhnces gold leaf color.

Lungwort Raspberry Splash

Pulmonaria or Lungwort 'Raspberry Splash'

Pretty rapberry-pink spring flowers above mottled silver and dark green foliage. Great in the shady garden with rich organic soil and consistenct moisture. 10- 12 inches. Like hostas, pulmonaria are prizes for their foliage.

Jacob's Ladder Bressingham

Jacob's Ladder 'Bressingham Purple'

'Bressingham Purple' has compact mounds of dark purple foliage. Spiky purple blooms appear late spring into ealry summer atop burgundy stems. Best in light shade and 12-15 inches tall.

Hellebore

 Lenton Rose

The Lenton Rose or hellebore is a lovely, underused mound forming ground cover. It is one of the few green plants remaining in my garden throughout our bitter cold months. Thick leathery leaves have beautiful rose shaped flowers early in the season, around Lent. Easy to grow, pest free, long blooming  and evergreen- what more could we ask for!
