Most of the plants featured here are nectar plants, or those that provide sweet energy- rich nectar for butterflies and hummingbirds. It's important to also plant host plants on which butterflies lay their eggs which turn into caterpillars which turn into butterflies. Butterfly Weed

Asclepias is a must for any serious butterfly gardener. Butterfly weed is a source of food for the caterpillar larvae that becomes the Monarch butterfly. This hardy perennial comes up late in the spring. But provides 3 months of tangerine orange flowers from mid thru late summer. also a swell cut flower. 2 ft. tall.

This new dwarf butterfly bush is great in the garden, as a small low hedge or perfect in a pot. Blooms all summer without dead heading or pruning. Only 24-30 inches tall. A real butterfly magnet!

The closest to true red that's available. Purple buds open to purplish-red 12 inch flowers. Can reach 6-8 feet, unless trimmed. Best pruned in the spring before new growth begins.

Gaillardia 'Fanfare'

Upward-facing, orange-red flowers flare out like trumpets with bright yellow at the ends, creating a vivid medley of color. Flowering performance starts in early summer and continues into fall. This cultivar has an especially neat mounded form. 18-24 inches. Sun loving.

Compact, 2-3 ft. medium-sized bushy mound of dark green leaves. Huge saucer-shaped flowers appear in mid summer and continue until frost. This selection has blooms of rich solid red. Plants prefer evenly moist soil and sunny conditions.

Enormous single and semi-double golden blooms 6-9 in across on vigorous, uniform plants. 3-3 1/2 ft. May be short lived in our area but worth the effort. Allow to set seed in the fall and you will have extra plants next year.

Monarda Bee Balm Jacob Cline

Bee Balm 'Jacob Cline'

Very large, bright red florets appear in tight clusters atop stocky, square stems from midsummer to fall. This variety is one of the most mildew resistant. Monarda is native to eastern North America, so it is easy to grow and it multiplies quickly. Sun or light shade.

Eupatorium Little Joe

Joe Pye Weed 'Little Joe'

Eupatorium or Joe Pye weed is a bright burst of late summer purple flowers on dark purple stems. This compact version only grows 3- 4 ft tall and really attracts butterflies. Easy to grow in sun and loves moist sites but can handle drought as well.

Hardy upright selection sports light green leaves and deep rose flowers which age to a beautiful bronze. Can be substituted for shrubs in the landscape. Stout, sturdy stems support the massive flower heads which develop in summer and burst into bloom in fall. If left standing, they provide winter interest and food for birds.
