TRUDY'S TRIED AND TRUE

Trudy's Tried and True are plants that I've grown and watch perform in area gardens for many years. Some like purple coneflower have been around forever, whereas others like campanula 'blue waterfall' are relatively new.

Extra large single white Anemone. Long blooming

Anemone 'Honorine Jobert'
From late summer to fall, there is no flower quite like it. 2" flowers on tall stems are freely and continuously produced. Likes moisture. Long stems are great for cut flowers. 36"-42. Sun or part shade.

Warm yellow. Compact

Coreopsis 'Zagreb'
An excellent performer with bright golden-yellow flowers (a deeper yellow than 'Moonbeam') blooming from early through late summer. It forms an exceptionally bushy yet airy clump of fine, needle-like foliage on upright stems. 15 inches.

Cool blue bells on cascading plants

Campanula 'Blue Waterfall'
Lovely cascading habit. Blue, bell-shaped flowers cascade from the center of the plant. Has been known to reach a good spread the first year, then double in size the second year. An excellent plant for a rock garden wall, patio container, window box, or hanging basket. Trim occasionally to keep blooming well into fall. Sun or morning sun with pm shade is ideal. 8-10"

Perennial Plant of the Year 2006

Dianthus 'Firewitch'
Ice blue foliage forms a tidy groundcover that stays evergreen. Brilliant pink single flowers have frilled petals with a pleasing clove scent. Fragrant and long blooming. Easy to grow, easy to maintain, lots of flowers. Perennial of the Year 2006.  10-12 inches.

Geranium 'Rozanne'
Violet blue, saucer-shaped flowers are held above mounds of deep green foliage that is slightly marbled. This is an amazingly free-flowering cultivar; it keeps the blooms coming from late spring into mid-fall. In one season, one vigorous plant will cover a 2-3 foot area. Perennial of the Year 2008. Prefers sun or light shade.

Purple Coneflower (Echinacea magnus)
Beautiful rose-pink ray petals with a coppery-brown, spiky central cone. Daisy-like flowers appear from midsummer thru fall, after many other perennials have finished blooming. Coneflowers like it sunny and hot. 36 inches tall. Some spent blooms should be left on the plants in fall because their seeds provide winter food for finches and other birds.

Gaura 'Crimson Butterflies"
Hot pink flowers are held upright by short red stems slightly above the foliage. This new variety is very compact, with very dark crimson foliage. 24" height - 24" width. This drought and heat-tolerant perennial  is adaptable to almost any soil and is tolerant of high humidity. Blooms all summer.

Heuchera 'Caramel'
A robust grower with  yellow-orange leaves and purple-red undersides. A compact habit forming a tight mound. It looks great in containers or as edging. Best in morning sun and pm shade. 12 inches tall.

Shasta Daisy 'Becky'
2003 Perennial Plant of the Year. This may be the best selection of Shasta yet. Prized for its durability in the hot, humid summers of the south and its cold tolerance in the north. Large single white blooms are produced atop strong stems which are ideal for cutting. 36 inches but needs no staking.

Shasta Daisy 'Snowcap'
Pure white, single flowers are produced in abundance a top bushy mounds of foliage. 'Snowcap' has sturdy, uniform habit. Requires full sun and well-drained soil. Only 12-15 inches tall. Shatas bloom spring into early summer in our area.

Vivid blue. Plumbago

Plumbago (ceratostigma)
This underused hardy ground cover sports true blue late summer flowers that bloom through October. It  greens up very late in the spring but is vigorous once growth begins. The glossy green foliage turns bright red in fall. 8 to 10 inches. One of our most favorites!

Salvia 'Cardonna'
A rigidly upright habit and dark purple flower stems which accentuate the bright violet-blue flowers. They are great in fresh bouquets. Deadheading encourages a longer bloom time. If plants get leggy during the season, cut them all the way back to the newly developed foliage. 24 to 30 inches.

A short Salvia May Night.

Salvia 'Marcus'
A short salvia, only 8 -12 inches. Deep purple color, outstanding compact habit, incredible bloom time (June to October). Cut back after first bloom for fresh appearance. Excellent in the front of the border or in a container. Deadheading encourages a longer bloom time.

Phlox 'David'
2002 Perennial Plant of the Year. 'David' displays enormous heads of fragrant, white flowers from mid to late summer. The bright green foliage and sturdy constitution make this plant beautiful even when it's not in bloom. One of the most powdery mildew resistant. 36 to 42 Inches tall.

Veronica 'Royal Candles'
Masses of violet-blue spikes  above the compact, upright, deep green foliage bloom all summer long. Deadheading will promote additional blooms Butterflies love to drink their sweet nectar. Unlike some other veronicas, the bottom foliage of this variety does not die out. 15-18 inches
