RICK'S PICKS FOR SUN

Rick's Picks for Sun are dependable, winter hardy, long blooming favorites. All these selections prefer sunny warm sites with good drainage, especially winter drainage. Most will bloom all summer, at least off and on, if trimmed back and/or deadheaded occasionally.                                                    
 

Dianthus 'Raspberry Swirl'
These awesome two tone pink and maroon blooms carpet loose mounds of tidy gray-green foliage in spring till mid summer. If deadheaded, they will rebloom in the fall. Plenty of sun and regular water, not drought tolerant.

Dianthus 'Shooting Star'
Magenta purple flowers spring till mid summer, depending on temps. Even more wonderful, flowers exude the spicy scent of cloves. Plants will rebloom in the fall if spent flowers are removed. The evergreen foliage is a glaucous blue-green, forming compact attractive  mounds about 7" tall and wide.

Coreopsis 'Creme Brulee'
Soft yellow blooms cover the compact mounds of bright green, thread leaf foliage from early thru late summer. Cutting this plant back by 1/3 to 1/2 after its first flush of flowers will extend the bloom period into fall. Similar to 'Moonbeam' but is more prolific, producing larger flowers and displaying improved mildew resistance. 16in.

Compact and long blooming make this a brilliant performer.

Coreopsis 'Jethro Tull'
Brilliant golden yellow flowers with fluted petals and a compact habit,15-18in. Try pairing 'Jethro Tull' with purple blooming perennials such as salvia or hardy geranium. Coreopsis is easy to grow, making it a good choice for beginners. One plant will provide you with long-lasting cut flower bouquets nearly all summer long.

Coreopsis 'Sweet Dreams'
Bicolor flowers of white with a raspberry center over needle-like foliage. Tremendous flower power. Long-lasting blooms, up to 1 1/2 inches, flower from late spring through summer. Color deepens to raspberry as the season progresses. Deadhead with hedge shears after flowering to freshen foliage. 18 inches tall.

Coreopsis 'Tequila Sunrise'
Olive green leaves sport distinct cream or yellow margins. In spring, however, the new growth is flushed pinkish-red, and in fall, it takes on a darker mahogany hue. In early summer, a profusion of blooms is produced and plants continue to flower sporadically through early fall. The large, daisy-like flowers are golden yellow with a red eye. 14-16inches tall.

Coneflower Big Sky 'Summer Sky'
Large flowers up to 5 inches across that are light orange with a rose colored halo and an orange cone. Tall stout stems hold up terrifically when cut for fresh bouquets. Flowers are delightfully fragrant . 30to 36 inches. Coneflowers like it sunny and hot.

Coneflower Big Sky 'Harvest Moon'
Gold flowers the color of a harvest moon with a golden orange cone.  Plant it up close where you can enjoy its delightful rose-like fragrance. Coneflowers like it sunny and hot. 18 to 24 inches

Coneflower Big Sky 'Sundown'
Warm russet-orange flowers with a prominent, brownish central cone.  Plant where you can enjoy its delightful rose-like fragrance.' Sundown' is similar to 'Sunset' but stands about 8-10 inches taller. Though the flowers are slightly smaller, Sundown is a more vigorous grower. 32 to 40 inches.

Coneflower 'Pixie Meadowbright'
Dwarf, pink coneflower. Beginning in midsummer, a profusion of vibrant pink flowers with an orange cone are produced atop compact, knee-high 18-20in plants. This plant is the perfect size for growing in decorative containers, small courtyard gardens, or near the front of the flower border.

Gaillardia 'Arizona Sun'
This compact and uniform perennial produces masses of large, 3" diameter, fiery orange-red blooms tipped by a ring of rich flame yellow. Butterflies are highly attracted to its bright colors. Plants bloom from early summer into fall. 8 to 10 in tall. Prefers sunny and hot sites.

Gaillardia 'Goblin'
Scarlet-red petals with sunny yellow tips surround the reddish-brown, button-like center. These daisy-like blooms are highly valued for their hot red and yellow hues and they attract butterflies. They require little care once established. They are heat tolerant and actually prefer to be grown in poorer soils. 12 in tall.

Gaillardia 'Oranges and Lemons'
Rather than the typical bright red and yellow flowers, 'Oranges & Lemons' has large, peachy orange flowers with yellow tips and a gold central cone. The blue-green foliage enhances this warm coloring. A more upright habit than other gaillardias. 22 to 24 in.

Gaura 'Siskiyou Pink'
Vase shaped plant that blooms from late spring until fall. Loads of flower stems bloom profusely. Will thrive in high heat and humidity. Needs good winter drainage. Very airy habit responds to cutting back by one half when 12-15 inches tall to control height. Can reach 2-3 ft if not trimmed.

Monarda 'Gardenview Scarlet'
Vibrant scarlet red flowers from midsummer to early fall. . 'Gardenview Scarlet' has demonstrated a high resistance to mildew and was selected from the Chicago Botanic Garden as an outstanding perennial for Midwest gardens. The flowers' sweet nectar attracts scores of hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees to the garden

Monarda 'Coral Reef'
A hot pink monarda with coral over tones Large flowers with good mildew resistance.
Monarda is native to eastern North America, so it is easy to grow and it multiplies quickly. The flowers' sweet nectar attracts scores of hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees to the garden

Monarda 'Petite Delight'
This was the first dwarf monarda with mildew resistant foliage to be introduced to the trade. Lavender-rose flowers top the stout, square stems from midsummer to early fall. They are enhanced by the lush dark green, crinkled foliage which forms a compact mound. 12-15 in. 'Petite Delight' was selected from the Chicago Botanic Garden's  as an outstanding perennial for Midwest gardens.
